“Dancing with Myself” - Billy Idol
Our favorite British bad boy struck gold with the 1981 release of his single “Dancing with Myself,” originally recorded in a 1979 demo by his band then called Generation X. While he was already the next big thing in the UK, this party anthem made him a household name in the United States
Billy got the idea after watching Japanese kids at a Tokyo disco “dancing with themselves” in a nightclub. Idol once said, “The song really is about people being in a disenfranchised world where they’re left bereft, dancing with their own reflections,” a feeling that has become all too familiar in a world in quarantine.
